The Magicians (S02E06) “The Cock Barrens” Review

Quentin does some interpretive dance spell… or something in order to draw in Alice’s ghost/niffin but Margo and Eliot aren’t convinced. So Quentin goes to Alice’s memorial at her parents’ house. There he sees her ghost again leading him to her father’s, Daniel’s study. There Quentin finds an Egyptian Book of the Dead. Daniel explains that Alice’s spirit isn’t at rest so she wants them to help her put her “ka” to rest. Daniel thinks it’s best not to include Stephanie because she’s a bit emotionally unstable right now. Just as they finished the pyramid, Daniel tells Quentin that he has to climb a ladder and hang a spelled mirror from the top. Daniel’s afraid of heights. Alice’s spirit pops back up and shows Quentin a picture of her, Daniel and her cat Alannis Morrisette. Daniel explains that Alice’s cat got stuck up a tree but Daniel was too afraid to get it down. Daniel decides to face his fear of heights now for Alice. He breaks a leg in the process. Quentin tries to tell Daniel that his daughter died a hero but Daniel is too bereaved to talk about Alice at all. Stephanie was listening and tells Quentin they will finish the ritual together. Stephanie had to admit that she was a terrible mother which causes her to get emotional. Alice appears… less dead and more niffin. Turns out Quentin’s smoke demon didn’t kill her just absorbed her into Quentin’s tattoo. She wants out but she’s going to have some fun while she waits.

Eliot and Margo have more crazy stuff to deal with as Prince S of Loria comes for a visit suggesting a 50/50 split of the Well Spring and Margo’s hand in marriage. Margo freaks out and flat out refuses. In retaliation one of S’s guards casts a spell and moves the castle to the Cock Barrens (which are a bunch of stone spires that look like… you get it). Eliot has to take care of a few things but Margo protests at being left alone with these “Lorian Barbarians” (her words… verbatim). Eliot tries to get her to see reason, that the royal life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I think Margo likes the idea of being queen more than actually being one. Penny needs a map to a place that can help him get the magic back in his hands but the map guy is being difficult. He tries to find Margo and Eliot as their castle is missing. Margo decides to try her own form of diplomacy on the arrogant Prince S. Penny visits Margo in her dreams and she tells him where they are. Eliot’s wife, Fen, finally tells him the truth of how she knew Balor and that she was with the FU Fighters (that’s still funny). Fen says she’s not in love with Eliot but she believes in him as a ruler. Still Eliot is hurt at the deception. After Margo had sex with S she goes to Eliot to say she changed her mind on marrying him. Eliot is upset because he may not love Fen but he was starting to like her until she told him about her past as a terrorist. Penny figures out that the castle didn’t actually go anywhere… It was an illusion spell. Margo is furious at Prince S’s deception and declares war on Loria. The map maker makes Penny a map. Did Penny make a new friend? Aww.

Julia can’t stay out of trouble for one episode. She finds Dana, the woman who banished Reynard decades ago. Kady goes to see an old friend of her mother’s to help them. Julia tracks down Dana reveals that she too was raped by Reynard and had his baby. She lures Julia down to her basement (because that’s always a great idea) to where she keeps her Haxon-Paxon which keeps her safe from Reynard. Dana knocks Julia out, ties her up, and when she comes to tells her that the only way to banish Reynard is to harness the power of Julia’s baby while it’s being born. Dana says that she gave up her baby but that he’s now a good, influential man. So maybe the baby won’t be evil like it’s fox daddy. Kady manages to come to Julia’s rescue. They take the Haxon-Paxon with them. Unfortunately that leaves Dana vulnerable and Reynard comes calling, seeking revenge on her for banishing him all those years ago.

A+! So Fillory’s in a war, Quentin is carrying Niffin Alice around in his back tattoo, and Julia has to have her rape fox baby. Quite an emotional roller coaster. This makes wonder though who is Dana and Reynard’s son? Is it Dean Fogg? Or maybe one of our student magicians? Dana said he was influential which leaves Dean Fogg and Eliot. Or perhaps it’s someone we don’t know! We’ll have to wait to find out.
