The Goldbergs (S04E18) “Doggie Howser”

Review: Lainey gets into a university that doesn’t have a pre-med program that Barry could go to next year. So he decides to become a licensed doctor before Lainey goes to college. But when even Beverly doesn’t support this ridiculous idea, Barry gives up his dream. Instead he tries to be a fashion designer. With some help from the JTP, Barry does a fashion show, under his new name Baré. Because this isn’t a success, Beverly talks to Lainey, who then tries to get Barry to break up with her to make sure he follows his dreams. But Barry is not just giving up his girl, even if it would mean that he has to change everything about himself. But Lainey can’t let Barry do this, so she confesses that she doesn’t really want to break up, which only makes Barry more confused about what he should do in the future.

Meanwhile, Erica is also thinking about her future, but when Murray doesn’t want to pay for college, she tries to prove that he favorites their dog Lucky over his own kids. Erica and Adam fake a fire to confront Murray that he cares more about Lucky, but it accidentally lets the dog escape. Murray gets emotional talking about the dog leaving, but it’s actually a metaphor for how sad he is about Erica leaving for college next year. Because the kids don’t want to see Murray crywhisper again, they go out to find Lucky.

They eventually do find the dog, but Adam injures himself. While everybody at the house is panicking about Adam, Barry is the only one who steps up and at least tries to help him. While it wasn’t really right what he did, Barry did follow his doctor instincts to help his brother. Barry does want to become a doctor, even though this means that there might not be a future for his relationship with Lainey. So the couple decides to make the best of the few months that they have left together.

Murray and Erica talk their problems out as well. Erica says that now that she knows how Murray feels, she’s thinking about going to school in Philadelphia to be closer to the family. But Murray tells her to go wherever she wants, no matter how hard it is for him.

This episode showed us that Murray actually can show his emotions, something we haven’t seen very often. I thought it was hilarious to see Murray’s crywhispering, but also just very nice to see him care at all.

The other storyline finally addressed a topic that I have been wondering about this season: what happens to Barry and Lainey when Lainey goes off to college. I’m glad it finally got a storyline, but on the other hand it makes me sad to know that they will probably eventually break up (even though that was already expected). AJ Michalka was great in this episode, not only in the more dramatic scenes, but on the comedy side as well.

I think it’s good that The Goldbergs is looking at the future. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens next season when Erica goes off to college, and I can’t wait to see what storylines are in store for us.
